How to Overcome Depression while Studying in Medical College

How to overcome depression while studying in medical college

Why is that medical students feel depressed for most part of day and feel irritated all the time. What changes happen in your grey matter once you get into this competitive medical field. Let me explain my Journey in medical college and what I think are the five most common reasons.
I have experienced it myself. Let’s try to understand why medical students feel so depressed or extremely disconnected from themselves and others, and how to deal with these feelings

5 reasons that dishearten Doctors several times

  1. Constant comparison with peers while we are trying to complete the extensive syllabus.
  2. Doing the same thing every-day like studying with book or an app daily making it monotonous.
  3. Then feeling bored and scrolling furiously on Instagram or tinder. Seeing others enjoying life and one feels like hell.
  4. We sacrifice time doing things we are passionate about in order to maximize study time but actually are not doing any thing productive. No topics are covered at the end of the day and hence the next day is even worse thinking about how I wasted yesterday.
  5. No time tables are adhered to and studying looks like punishment. You forgot that you got into medical field because you were a good reader than other students back in your school. From a school topper who loved to study, you have become a study hater who wants to do PG. But PG in what I don’t know? I mean look at it 5 years are a torture and you think that next 3 years in an MD will be a game changer.

Now the solutions offered by me for the same are simple and straightforward. All of them have to be implemented together to ensure your better performance.

  1. Spice up your room with bright colour combinations in pillow covers, bed sheets and a nice calming scenery of a destination you would like to go once the pandemic is over. The endorphins released on seeing a calm clean room is the first thing to be set right. A cluttered room is mood spoiler. Start of the day by making your bed.
  2. Talk to your self in front of large mirror every morning, pump yourself Rahul Dravid or Sachin tendulkar would be before going out and smashing the bowlers all over the park. Today is gonna be great, I will be calm and confident and smile at everybody. Don’t learn the sledging of Virat Kohli. Learn how is he so strong and fit mentally all the time. Being nice to others will make you work better and remove negativity from your mind.
  3. Contact your family and a comforting voice can change your mood and remind you that you are doing it to make your parents so proud of your achievements.
  4. Do something apart from furiously scrolling Instagram or FB. This is important for your sanity. Those who post every hour on FB may be sadder that you are and only showing off. Never Show off and be humble.
  5. WORRY LESS about oh! So much time I’ve wasted! What-ever happens was meant to happen and you need to learn from it and move on to the next day which will brighter and more fruitful.
